23 Oct 2018 - I added a page as a tribute to "Yellow 1" of the Condor Squadron 135, which crashed today in California, where I live.
30 Sep 2018 - We've transitioned to the Reichs Defense portion of III Gruppe's history. The first day of 17 April 1943, was added to the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies section. It is a day that Hptm. Hans-Ekkehard Bob will never forget.
26 Aug 2018 - "The Hardest Day", 18 August 1940, was added to the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies section. For the next entries, we'll be fast forwarding in a time machine to 1943 and start focusing on III Gruppe's struggle against the 4-engine bombers "viermots" of the 8th Air Force.
04 Aug 2018 - The story of a valiant foe, who took the well being of others at the cost of his own, 16 August 1940, was added to the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies section
22 Jul 2018 - One of the darkest days of the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, 15 August 1940, was added to the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies section.
30 Jun 2018 - We are beginning to explore the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies. The next entry in the series was just added for 12 August 1940.
20 Jun 2018 - Wow, I can't believe I started this website nearly 20 years. I apologize to followers of this site for its abrupt disappearance. It's back! It's also showing its age. Time permitting I'll retool the entry portal to make it easier to navigate, especially on mobile devices. I will be focusing on the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies. I never had a chance to get this section of the page off the ground beyond the March 1944 entry. I've ordered a Prien book to cover 1943 and a few book on the Battle of Britain. Those tomes, plus my existing library, should provide good references. If you would like to contribute to this project, drop me an e-mail (envelope on front page). Thank you for all the support over the years!
29 Dec 2002 - Christer Bergstrom kindly provided a preliminary manuscript from his forthcoming book, Black Cross - Red Star Vol. 3. The chapter describes the last few missions flown by III Gruppe on the Eastern Front, prior to their transfer to the West. It can be read here in the Pilots Speak section.
11 Oct 2002 - Bill Marshall had updated his Gruppe and Staffel emblems chart. Check it out over at the JG 54 History section.
25 Jun 2002 - Two new profiles by Claes Sundin were added to the Famous Grunzherz Jagdfliegers section. The aircraft profiled belong to Otto Kittel and Wilhelm Schilling. Special thanks to Claes Sundin for giving permission to show the profiles on this webpage. Yes, strangers, an update in less than a year. The website name has been renewed for another two years. I've been debating on whether to start a JG 54 Victory List. I'll need a lot of outside help. JG 54 victories are hard to come by from published sources. Participation from the Luftwaffe community is essential for any modicum of success. Also, I will be adding a new section to the webpage, showing screenshots from the IL-2 computer game. More to follow.
16 Nov 2001 - It's been over a year since I last updated this page. Yes, I am still maintaining it. There are several reasons for the inactivity, most of which are the issues familiar to all of us in everyday life. Also, a modicum of burnout crept into the picture as well. Finally, there has been a paucity of information to post. This has since changed because the JG 54 History section has a new addition. Bill Marshall has made a beautiful chart of JG 54 Gruppe and Staffel emblems. Please check it out and give him some feedback.
12 Nov 2000 - Wow, it's been quite awhile since the last update. A lack of time and new material have been the main culprits. Nevertheless, there's an exciting new addition the webpage. Jerry Boucher has done two wonderful pictures with JG 54 aircraft as the subject. Take a look in the Photo Op section.
24 Jun 2000 - Visited the Riverside airport last month. At the airport was the Confederate Air Force B-17, Sentimental Journey. I took some pictures of this fabulous plane, inside and out. Take a look in the Photo Op section.
15 May 2000 - Added the profile of Erwin Leykauf in the Famous Grunzherz Jagdfliegers section. Included in the profile are several pictures of Leykauf taken throughout his aviation career and Claes Sundin has been gracious enough to provide a profile of Leykauf's 109E "Black 3".
02 Apr 2000 - The latest update to the JG 54 Verlusliste is now available. Also, Christer Bergström has a new link to the Black Cross - Red Star webpage so check it out! It is also extremely likely that in the future this webpage will get a permanent web address so if I change ISP's, the webpage location will not be affected. I say this because I am thinking about obtaining a DSL line and my current ISP does not offer an affordable option for DSL.
23 Dec 1999 - The latest update to the JG 54 Verlusliste is now available. Gunther has added a separate Gruppe column to aid researchers in sorting the loss listing. Also, the english translations of the abbreviations has returned. Be sure to download the Winzip file of volume 12_1999 here. Merry X-mas and Happy New Year everyone!
17 Dec 1999 - Claes Sundin sent in several corrected and revamped profiles to replace the ones that can be found in the Famous Grunzherz Jagdfliegers section. A few of the changes are subtle but the most important aspect is that they are more accurate than before. Also, there have been corrections to the Trautloft biography sent in by Gunther Rosipal. Finally, each pilot biography that was given a new Sundin profile has its background in white and is now easier to read. Enjoy!
28 Nov 1999 - In celebration of the holiday season that began this week, here is another update. This time it is a revised biography of Hannes Trautloft that covers his time in Spain. Also Claes Sundin (isn't he amazing?) has made a profile of Trautloft's 109V3 that he test flew in Spain. I hope one and all had a good start to the holidays and is able to spend time with those that matter most. This latest update can be found in the Famous Grunzherz Jagdfliegers section.
27 Nov 1999 - Chris Boonzaier sent in a mission anecdote by Heribert Koller of 5./JG 54 and also a scanned image of Koller's victory claims. This latest update can be found in the Famous Grunzherz Jagdfliegers section.
08 Nov 1999 - On Nov 6, 1999, there was a Gathering of Eagles in Long Beach, California. I was able to attend and took some photos of some of the German aces signing books, prints and photos. Once again, the aces are signing Christer Bergstrom's and Claes Sundin's book - Luftwaffe Fighter Aircraft in Profile. These pictures are available in the Photo Op section.
13 Oct 1999 - The second update to the JG 54 Verlusliste is now available. Be sure to download the Winzip file of volume 10_1999 here.
17 Sep 1999 - The first update to the JG 54 Verlusliste is now available. Be sure to download the Winzip file of volume 09_1999 here. Thanks to Gunther Rosipal for his tireless efforts.
01 Sep 1999 - On the Luftwaffe Discussion Board, there is a recent discussion regarding an article on air battles with JG 54. Christer Bergstrom has been kind enough to allow me to link to his page so that all can read his notes and comments on the article in question. His comments can be found here.
12 Aug 1999 - Finally! At last the move from GeoCities is complete. Thank you all for being so patient and promptly updating your bookmarks and links to this page. Well, there hasn't been much material to update this page. Luckily, Sean Leeman is working on a short biography of Eisenach which should be posted shortly. Also, I hope to redo the Pilots speak section so you don't have to wait for the whole page to load. Rather, I'll just have each contribution listed separately and you can click and go to the text at leisure. Again, thanks for your patience and continued support. Horrido!
10 Jun 1999 - A large update this week. I visited the Champlin Fighter Museum in Mesa, Arizona this month and took photos of the Fw 190 D-13 and Me 109 E-3 on display. As a special bonus Gunther Rall and Walter Schuck were at an aces symposium in San Diego, California. These fine gentlemen allowed me to take their photos signing Christer Bergstrom's and Claes Sundin's book - Luftwaffe Fighter Aircraft in Profile. All these pictures are available in the Photo Op section.
27 May 1999 - Verne Woods tells the story of his last mission in the B-17 'The Black Swan' in the Pilots Speak section. Minor updates to the 7/JG 2 photo of the Fw 190s and in the III Gruppe versus the Western Allies section concerning the photo of Wilhelm Schilling's Me 109 G-6.
18 Apr 1999 - Another tax season has come and gone. In celebration, a partial listing of Max-Hellmuth Ostermann's victories has been added.
06 Mar 1999 - On the 55th Anniversary of the Mighty Eighth's Berlin Raid, the JG 54 Webpage debuts a new addition - III/JG 54 vs the Western Allies.
27 Feb 1999 - Minor updates to the Links page.
13 Feb 1999 - A scan of the combat report of Reinhard Meisig detailing the disapperance of III. Gruppe Kommandeur - Arnold Lignitz has been added to the Photo Op section.
23 Jan 1999 - Hans Iffland of IV./JG 3 describes his actions during the March 6, 1944 daylight raid on Berlin in the Pilots Speak section.
20 Dec 1998 - A scan of a telegram from Generaloberst Keller congratulating JG 54 on achieving its 1,500th victory has been added to the Photo Op section.
22 Nov 1998 - An interview with Pavlichenko Aleancrovich who describes being shot down in an Su-2 in the Pilots Speak section.
14 Nov 1998 - A scan of a document signed by Hannes Trautloft awarding the fighter clasp in bronze has been added to the Photo Op section.
10 Oct 1998 - Hans-Ekkehard Bob describes being shot down behind enemy lines in the Pilots Speak section.
17 Sep 1998 - Without fanfare - a 1,900+ entry Verlustliste (loss listing) for JG 54 is now available in the Loss List section of the webpage.
02 Sep 1998 - Walter Nowotny describes one of his first aircombats in the Pilots Speak section.
07 Aug 1998 - Photos taken from Monino airfield, kindly provided by Christer Bergström have been added to the Photo Op section.
24 July 1998 - An excerpt from the diary of Hannes Trautloft has been added to the Pilots Speak section.
15 July 1998 - A map of the Leningrad area was stitched together and is now available in the Maps section. I warn you - this sucker is over 650k! Eat dinner, lunch or breakfast and it should be done loading by the time you return.
27 June 1998 - Several pictures were added to the Photo Op section. These includes shots from the Chino Air Museum located in southern California and a couple of pictures from my summer vacation to my ancestral home in Germany in 1997.
22 June 1998 - This isn't announcing an update to the webpage. Rather, after six long months, the Axel Urbanke book, "Green Hearts - First in Combat with the Dora 9" arrived at my home. Mr. Urbanke has done his research thoroughly and footnotes and cross-references many statements made by pilots and witnesses to operations of III./JG 54. Of course, the real treasure are the loss lists and victory claims located at the back of the book. You can bet that the JG 54 loss list will be updated (properly footnoting on where the data came from of course) using the information that Urbanke found.
